New Technology & The 1920's

1. How did the automobile affect America?
- It opened up new buisnesses such as the gasoline station, repair shops, and motels, there even began to be more roads everywhere.
2.What was urban sprawl and what caused it?
- urban sprawl was when cities started to move into different directions, and the automobile industry caused it.
3. What was the first use of airplanes NOT during war?
-The first job that planes did was to carry the mail across the country.

Recreation in the U.S

When and why did Americans begin to recreate ? Were the reasons Americans began to recreate the same or different compared to Americans today ?

-Around the late 1800's Americans began to recreate themselves. They fought off city congestion and dull industrial work, by enjoying amusement parks, bicycling, new forms of theater, and spectator sports. Americans today still do the same thing by taking vacation days off of work and going to amusment parks with their families.

Treatment of colored people

1.)How did Mexicans earn a living in the late 1800's, and where did they do this work ?

- In the late 1800s Mexicans earned a living by working on the railroads where they worked in the Southwest.


2.)Describe African - American life in the 1900's (where did they move to, what was their experience ?)

-The life of African Americans was very bad. In the late 1800s, blacks were lynched without there being any trials. In the 1900s, things got worse.



Teddy Roosevelt

1.) Describe T.R's life before he became president (where he was from, date he was born etc.)
- Was born Oct. 27 1858 and died on Jan. 6th 1919. Teddy R. was born in New York City. He was the child of Theodore and Martha Roosevelt. T.R. attended Harvard University.

2.) How did T.R. become President ?
- T.R. was the 26th president of the U.S. his term was Sept. 14, 1901 through March 4, 1909. He became president when president William McKinley was shot and killed in 1901

3.) What was T.R's Bully Pulpit ?
- It was a terrific platform from which to advocate an agenda . (example - the White House)

4.) Summarize T.R's opinion on the civil rights.
- T.R.'s opinion on the civil rights was that he wanted the blacks and whites to be seperate but equal .

5.) Explain if you would like T.R as president, if he were president today.
- I don't think I would like for T.R. to be president today because seperation would not be ideal for this time period.

Post WWI United States






Describe the feeling many Americans had after WWI.
Americans were tired of death,war, econmic changes, and different changes and tired of unemployment.

What were some reactions by Americans to their post-WWI feelings?

What did the Palmer raids accomplish? Why did Palmer do the raids?


What did the KKK fear? Did their membership grow in the 1920’s

KKK against foreigners. Yes, KKK membership reached 4.5 million white malepersons, native-born citizens. The Klan believed in keepig blacks "in their place".

What was the quota system?
Congress passed the Emergency Quota Act

Was the quota system discriminatory? If yes, to whom?
The quota system was discriminatory towards the people in eastern and southern Europe.

How was Mexico affected by the quota systen?
Mexico was affcted by the quota system because the laws did not apply to the immagrants location in the western hemisphere  & almost 500,00 Mexicans had crossed the nations boarder.

How was Japan affected by the quota system?
The law was against Japenesse immigration.

The U.S after WWI

1.) Describe the feeling many Americans had after WWI ...
Americans were tired of a lot of things.

2.) What were some reactions by Americans to their post WWI feelings?

- Many were stressed out, and were afraid of outsiders so they became Nativist, or prejudice against foreign - born people. They also became Isolationism, which is the feeling of not wanting to reach out into the world because they were afraid of getting hurt. Americans also had a fear of communism, which was an economic & political system based on a single - party government ruled by a dictatorship, this also supported getting rid of capitalism.

3.) What did the Palmer raids accomplish ? Why did Palmer do the raids ?
- Palmer was going after political radicals. Palmer was afraid of communism, but he did not find anything when he went after the political radicals.

4.) What did the KKK fear ? Did their membership grow in the 1920's ?
- The KKK feared the Red Scares, and they didn't like any other race besides the white's.

5.) What was the quota system ?
- The quota system was a law that established the maximum number of people who could enter the United States from each foreign country

6.) Was the quota system discriminatory ? If yes to whom ?
- Yes the quota system was discriminatory against people from eastern and southern Europe, mostly Catholics and Jews.

7.) Was Mexico affected by the quota system discriminatory ?
- No Mexico was affected, because 500,000 Mexicans crossed the border.

8.) Was Japan affected by the quota system discriminatory ?
- Yes, they were affected because they already had a part in the Gentlemen's Agreement.
