Recreation in the U.S

When and why did Americans begin to recreate ? Were the reasons Americans began to recreate the same or different compared to Americans today ?

-Around the late 1800's Americans began to recreate themselves. They fought off city congestion and dull industrial work, by enjoying amusement parks, bicycling, new forms of theater, and spectator sports. Americans today still do the same thing by taking vacation days off of work and going to amusment parks with their families.
